15 Nov, 2017

A full fledged documentary series on Shanti Bhavan is now available on Netflix: Daughters of Destiny: The Journey of Shanti Bhavan. Directed by Academy Award-winner Vanessa Roth and scored by legendary composer A.R. Rahman, this four-part Netflix docuseries depicts how Shanti Bhavan’s revolutionary educational model empowers five young women to break the cycle of poverty.

Shilpa

Born into a poor rural village, Shilpa witnessed crime, domestic violence, alcoholism, and poverty as a child. Shanti Bhavan provided a respite, allowing Shilpa to be the first in her family to finish high school. She then went on to complete her Bachelor’s in Journalism and Master’s in Psychological Counselling. Shilpa recently published her first memoir, The Elephant Chaser’s Daughter, where she chronicles the joys and pains of navigating her two different worlds, and all the lessons she has learned along the way.

Manjula

Seeing the people in her village struggle with a lack of good medical care stoked in Manjula a passion for a career in medicine. After graduating from Shanti Bhavan, she entered nursing school and began visiting impoverished communities, educating them on how to lead healthier lives. After graduation, she hopes to open her own clinic to help build a better future for her family and others.

Preetha

Preetha’s poetry says more than we ever could about her hopes and dreams, as well as the challenges she’s faced in her young life. Next year she will graduate with a Bachelor’s in Political Science and History. She hopes to find a career that ignites her passions and allows her to help her mother and brother, with whom she has grown closer since the tragic recent death of her father.
